A friend recommended kefir to me because of all it's amazing health boosting properties, so I thought I would give it a try. Kefir is a live product made from kefir grains which are added to milk, causing it to ferment. The end product is packed with millions of a variety of strains of live bacteria. We need these microorganisms to effectively break down and digest our food.
Over time, for a number of reasons (such as taking antibiotics) the population of these useful bacteria can get diminished in our gut and need replenishing, and this is where kefir comes in. Have a cupful every morning before you eat anything else and let the good bacteria in your gut get multiplying and do their important work!
Kefir is reported to help:
- overall digestive health
- relieve the symptoms of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
- boost the immune system
- fight harmful bacteria (and therefore infections)
- improve the quality of your skin eg acne
- fight cancer
- improve bone density (and prevent osteoporosis)
- help autoimmune problems such as asthma and eczema
plus it's packed full of vitamins such as B & D too!
So what's the downside? Well it doesn't taste very nice! I add half a banana, some blueberries and raspberries to mine and whizz it up in the blender and it's tolerable, in fact after a while you get to kind of like it!
It's quite expensive too if you buy it already made up... I bought a course (3 weeks of it) from The Chucking Goat for £45 but you can make it at home using kefir grains for next to nothing. Kefir is now so popular that you can buy Kefir smoothies in the big supermarkets now.
I am on week 3 and I have to say I am feeling better than I have done for ages! I have more energy, my skin is better and my head feels clearer!
I would definitely recommend giving it a try!
